    Hi Ramos23,

When you said "big website", how big is it? A 1000-page website or something like Facebook or Google that sort?

If you’re just getting started, I reckon you probably won’t hit to "big website" level in the next 2 years, a shared hosting plan should suffice (about $10 or less per month, depending on the number of years you sign up for – the longer you sign up upfront, the more discount you get).

But if you’re starting out with a really big scale site like Facebook or Google or slightly smaller, then you will need a dedicated server and may have to pay somewhat $100+ to $400+ per month.

I mean, if you’re building a website of up to 1000 pages, I think you can still start off with a shared hosting plan and once the amount of traffic hits beyond the resources of shared hosting, you can then upgrade to VPS (virtual private server) hosting – about $20 – $200+ per month.

You might like to check out this article about which hosting plan to go with and which is the good hosting company for hosting a huge website:

    => http://www.diehardwebhosting.com/web-hosting-tips/which-web-hosting-plan-suits-you-best.htm

As for what is needed to run a big website, you need these basic tools & resources:

    1. Domain Name
    2. Web Host

You can learn about getting a profit-pulling domain name and the essential components that make up a reliable web host on this web page:

    => http://www.diehardwebhosting.com/web-hosting-tips/

    3. Web Design

How do you want your website to look like? Do you know HTML coding? Do you like to design the website yourself or you’d prefer to pay someone to do it for you?

Doing it yourself has a lot of benefits because you have total control over any changes you want to make and most importantly, you save costs. But it requires you to pick up the coding knowledge and web design skill which you’ll need to trade in the time for.

By contrast, if you hire a web designer, whatever changes you need to make you have to go through him. And he might not be able to serve you immediately as he may be bogged down with other web design projects. The price could cost anywhere from $1000 – $10,000 depending on the platform, scope of the site, the complexity of design etc. Don’t forget that you may need to pay extra for on-going updates of the design here and there, and these costs could add up to a hefty sum. What’s more, you won’t stick to just one website. Getting the fella to build more websites for you incur more costs.

It took me about 9 months to master the basic HTML coding and graphic designing without the slightest knowledge about HTML in the first place. It’s worth it considering now I can build a pro and lucrative website at my disposal and whatever parts and bells and whistles I want to add / remove I can do them at will.

So, I suggest that you go get some books about HTML coding or you can actually get a cool software that all you need to do is drag and drop the buttons and tabs and other objects so you can easily create a website to your liking without being a coding geek. Nonetheless, you need to know some basic HTML.

    4. A Web Form

It will help capture your subscribers’ contact info so you can keep in touch with them about what’s hot on your website and introduce your products to them. This you will need an email marketing autoresponder system.

    5. Content

Depending on your business model. If yours is somewhat like Facebook, you may not need much content to begin with as most content will come from the users or members. But if you’re doing something like introducing products through articles, then you’ll need to know how to write a killer article or sales letter that will get your products sold. Of course, you can hire some pros to produce the content for you.

    6. Payment processor

If you have your own products to sell, you would need a payment processor such as ClickBank, 2CheckOut or PayPal to help process the transactions seamlessly.

    7. Traffic

There are various ways to generate website traffic. Search engine optimization (SEO), article marketing, forum postings, blogging, social networking etc. All these especially SEO and article marketing require good writing techniques and knowledge about search engines so you can garner free search engine traffic without paying through your nose.

These are roughly the key things you would need to run any sort of websites, including big website. You can find out ALL the essential and complementary tools / resources you need to make your website even more appealing and lucrative at:

    Hope that helps.

Well you can start with a smaller plan from http://easydch.com/hosting and let the website grow, then upgrade at any time. You may never need to upgrade because the Ultimate plan can handle more than one (in fact a lot) of different large websites in one plan! So even the Deluxe plan has tons of space for room to grow, and the prices are great.

Starting with the basics HTML and CSS are a need to know. Basically these are the "design" codes, they work together to tell the web browser how the site should be displayed on the screen.

Now to make the site work, the ‘interactive’ portions of the website, you’ll need to know a server side scripting language like PHP. Like if you are going to have a log-in, members, profiles, shopping cart, forums, listings, search, like I said just about any interactivity… This is done server side and many times would also need a database like MySQL to function.

To get started there are great guides and general references for HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL as well as others at http://www.w3schools.com

    You can check www.sibinfotech.com

It would cost around $6/mo to host a big website

you need to have a team of tech experts and lots of funds to run a big website

Hostgator or Godaddy. the expense is very small, less than $20. The size of your site makes no difference in the cost.
You ask what is needed to run a big website knowledge-wise? Not knowing what experience you have now, I will assume you have none. It will take a lot of knowledge, as you will have to build the site, and make it search engine friendly, and optimize it for keywords. The learning curve is steep if you have no experience.

If it’s a startup you probably don’t immediately need the expensive dedicated server(s) big name sites use, most $8/mo hosting accounts offer unlimited space and bandwidth on a shared server, they find reason to kick you off if you get too many thousands of visits a day. It can take some time for one’s ambitions to become a reality, getting search engine ranking, which is the main source of traffic for many sites, can take months.

Better security and control is gained with a dedicated server, which might be $100 – $500 a month the higher end includes administration, which is essential for non techies.

A surprising number of business sites are run with the wordpress CMS blog engine, which allows one to add a design them and add content with no coding, most hosting accounts have ‘one click’ wordpress installers.

If you are looking for shared hosting that is inexpensive and can support your business as your website grows then you should consider www.midphase.com. They have the lowest prices I have ever seen. Once you start growing and need a dedicated server, MIdphase also has low prices on dedicated servers.

To manage a website you need to be able to update the content of the website as needed. If you want something that is very easy to manage then you should look at some content management systems. Options include: WordPress, Drupal and Joomla. If your site is e-commerce then you could use OsCommerce or ZenCart. Using a content management system will make it very easy to manage a large website even if you know very little about web development. Midphase.com can set you up quickly with any CMS that I mentioned above.
